Bianconeri Continue Derby della Mole Dominance
Juventus wrapped up a late win over Torino in the Derby della Mole with goals from Arturo Vidal and Claudio Marchisio. Victory over their city rivals means Juventus only need one more point to clinch their second consecutive Scudetto next Serie A matchday.
Besides local bragging rights both sides went into the game with a lot to play for as Torino looked to further pull away from the relegation zone and Juventus continuing their relentless march towards the title. Had results gone their way the previous night Juve could have been playing to win the title in the derby but Napoli’s 3-0 win at Pescara meant the Bianconeri would have to wait at least another week.
Antonio Conte continued with the 3-5-1-1 formation which has worked well in recent weeks meaning Marchisio would continue to support Mirko Vucinic in attack. Torino made a surprising change to their line-up with Paulo Vitor Barreto dropping to the bench which meant Riccardo Meggiorini would start alongside Rolando Bianchi.
It was Juventus who had the first real chance of the match at a rain soaked Stadio Olimpico in Turin. Paul Pogba picked up the ball at the half way line and played a magnificent through ball into the path of Vucinic who stabbed the ball wide of the goal when he should have scored.
Juventus then began to take control of the match with chances for Vidal and Pogba but both failed to convert, Torino also had a chance with a Bianchi header from a corner. Marchisio then had the ball in the net for Juve but he was offside, Santana then forced Buffon into a good save just before the break but it remained goalless in the first half.
The start of the second half was more scrappy with a few hard tackles flying in from both sides, Torino done well in spells to keep possession but as in the first half Juventus began to control and take the game to the hosts.
There were few clear cut chances and the match looked like it may be heading for a stalemate when Juve made the breakthrough just a few minutes from time as the ball sat up nicely for Vidal 25 yards from goal and he hit a wonderful half volley into the bottom corner to spark great scenes of celebration on the Bianconeri bench.
Torino then went down to ten men in the 90th minute as Kamil Glik received a second yellow card for a challenge on Juventus substitute Fabio Quagliarella.
There was still time for Juventus to score a second goal as a Andrea Pirlo free kick picked out Quagliarella at the back post who headed it back across goal for Marchisio to volley high into the net from close range.
Juventus now go into next week’s home game against Palermo needing just a point to win the Scudetto but they will surely be looking for a victory to kick off their title party in style.
